Tuesday, February 03, 2009 Ashley McCrory asks

Q: Sharp pain in breast and Itchy breast. Is this a sign of Breast Cancer?

I'm 15 yrs old and I've been getting a sharp pain in my breast. I also have itchy breast. My mom was diagnosed with Brain Cancer. Cancer runs in both sides of my family. Could this possibly be a sign of Breast Cancer?

Ashley, the sensations you are feeling are probably the growing pains of puberty.  As breasts grow and stretch the skin, you may feel pain and itching.  Sometimes teenagers have breast problems like infections or non-cancerous lumps, but they almost never have breast cancer.  Continue to be alert to what is happening in your body and let your parents, your doctor, or your school nurse know if this pain leads to redness or swelling.  That could be a sign of infection and would need a doctor's treatment.  I hope your mom is doing well with her cancer treatments.  I know how scared my teen-aged children were when I was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago.

What you describe sounds like the normal aches and itching of growing breasts.  You can read more about it at this link to our Guide to Teen Breast Development.
