Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, August 25, 2009 chloeandspencer12 asks

Q: Lupron vs. tomaxifin, which is more effective (clinical trial data, please)?

I'm evaluating my treatment options as a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient. DX 6/5/09; Lumpectomy +sentinal node biopsy 6/25/09.  Stage 1, Grade 3, ER+, PR+, 1 node + (1.2mm).

Current tx: 4 rounds Taxatere + Cytoxin (chemo every 3 wks). 1st round Aug. 5; complictation Aug. 9---appendicitis; Appendectomy aug. 10th = 10 bags of antibiotics and 3 day stay in private room @ hospital due to neuropenia & WBC count of 700.

2nd chemo tomorrow am (8/26/09).

Radiation to follow for 6-8 weeks and ovary removal within 5 months of Aug. '09 recommended. Do not desire to bear children & do not have any children at this time; however, concerned about side effects of removing the highest estrogen producing organ from my body permanately at age 31.

I'd be concerned about shutting down your estrogen so early. Losing your estrogen source at such an early age comes with a HUGE number of serious side effects. Including all the irritating menopause problems (painful sex, hot flashes, loss of libido, sleeplessness...) AND bone density loss leading to osteoporosis.

If I were you - and I'm not you, and I'm not a doctor, so speaking for myself - I'd take tamoxifen and keep my ovaries. This warrants a thorough discussion with your oncologist and, if necessary, a second opinion. It's not a decision you should rush into, or take lightly, given the lifelong effect this will have on you. Yes, it would lessen your risk of recurrence; but how great will your risk be, given your treatment? And if you have a recurrence, who says you can't just treat it again, especially with how treatment has been improving?

TOUGH DECISION, for sure! Readers, has anyone else faced this decision? If so, how did you deal with it? What did you decide? PJH
