Q: Does Low Dose Radiation From Mammograms Increase Breast Cancer?

I Read An Article This Week, About A New Study Presented At The Annual Meeting Of The Radiological Society Of North America, Showed That High Risk Women ( Women Who Have Familial Or Genetic Predisposition To Breast Cancer) Had An Average Increased Rate Of Breast Cancer Due To Low-Dose Radiation 1.5 Times Higher Than High Risk Women Not Exposed To The Radiation. It Said That Women Exposed Before Age 20 With Five Or More Exposures Were 2.5 Times More Likely To Develop Breast Cancer. Can You Tell Me Anything You Know Or Have Heard About This? I Had Breast Cancer July Of Last Year, And I Have Had Quiet A Few Mammograms Done Through The Years.

Hi - Do you have a familial or genetic predisposition to breast cancer? And did you start having mammograms before age 20, then have them in your 20s? So, are you looking for a cause for your breast cancer? Because there's really no way anyone can say X Y or Z caused your breast cancer.... they just don't know that level of information with any certainty yet.

As I answered in your other post, I'm sure the professional group that reported the study is reliable - beyond that, I couldn't comment with any degree of authority. I believe we've known for quite some time that radiation exposure to the chest area at an early age is a breast cancer risk - for instance, young women with non-Hodgkins lymphoma who receive radiaiton treatment are at increased risk for breast cancer later in life. So - again, I'm not an authority - but I'd say this is probably true. PJH
