Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, November 28, 2011 jenn asks

Q: I'm 15, and I'm having a bit of a panic attack. About a week or two ago, I got a small bump, slightly bigger than, say, a zit, or pimple, near the top of my right breast. Help?

This bump appeared one or two weeks ago, and hasn't gone away. Originally, I thought it was a zit, or pimple of some sort--sorry, I know that's gross--and just didn't pay attention to it. It's still here, though, and though I know it's highly unlikely to get breast cancer at my age, I'm still sort of panicked. I can't say if it's gotten bigger, or smaller, or stayed the same size, eause if it has I haven't really noticed, and I feel like my panic my affect any observations I make. It's not a lump underneath my skin, it's legitimately like a pimple on the top of my right breast. Please, someone, tell me, should I be concerned? Note: I'm very panicked about doctors, and really anything medical...at all.

Jenn, good for you to notice breast changes and do some research.

Breast cancer lumps are deep in the breast, usually in the milk ducts or lobules.  Your bump is some sort of skin issue, perhaps a harmless sebaceous cyst or a mole of some sort.  If this is a part of your breast that has been exposed to the sun or tanning machines and if it doesn't go away, a doctor may need to check it out to make sure it isn't a skin cancer.  However, given your age, I doubt that it would be any type of cancer.  If it turns red, painful, or gets bigger, you will need a doctor to check it out.  In the meantime, let your mom or other adult take a look.  She will have more experience in evaluating what needs a doctor's attention and what you can ignore.
