Q: Infiltrating ductal carcinoma with lymph node matastasis, 70 year old patient

My mother just had mastectomy and is recovering from it.  Her ER/PR report is not yet received.  Does she require any adjuvant therapy?

Sally, if she's in relatively good health, I'd assume, with lymph node involvement, they'd want her to have chemo. She may also need radiaiton, if the cancer has spread into the tissue surrounding the lymph nodes. If she's ER/PR positive or HER2-neu positive, they'd want her to take long-term drugs. Of course, she can refuse any of this - it's always a question of weighing the side effects against the benefits. Her doctor can tell you how much each of these treatments will reduce her risk of recurrence. Best of luck to both of you - PJH
