Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, August 18, 2008 Thanu asks

Q: My MIL has infiltrate ductal CA(non invasive, harmone receptor negative) for which she has undergone

radical mastectomy, followed by 5 course of chemotherapy. She is 74 years old. It is more than 2 years now, Now she has developed pneumonia for which she is taking treatment. Now my question is whether she needs any further investigation now? Her lung problem is anything to do with metastasis? We are all worried, please guide us what to do

Thanu, your mother-in-law's diagnosis is confusing - she can't have both non-invasive and infiltrating cancer, I don't believe. I'll assume it's IDC, and IS invasive. That said, her pneumonia is probably just that - pneumonia. Once she's recovered, I'd be sure to have her ask her oncologist to look at her lung scans, however, and possibly take some more, to make sure nothing is showing. Breast cancer can indeed metastasize to the lungs, so you need to be aware of that- don't worry, just be aware and watchful, OK? Good luck - PJH
