Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, October 24, 2009 samilou asks

Q: follow up mammogram

my biopsy was ok but had to go back and see about micro califications, i was told the radiologist can tell if everything is ok or if they need to be watched they said in my case i was sitting right in the middle and they couldn't decide, i have to go back in 6 months for another mammogram, could someone tell me if they think there is a chance of these califications being cancerous and what they mean by sitting right in the middle. I thought they would be able to tell one way or another, many thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi - Microcalcifications, if they're randomly scattered around the breast, are something many women have; they're no problem. But when those microcalcificaitons start to group up, or form themselves into a line, they could indicate that you MAY be developing some cancer - they're almost like a cancer precursor, a shadow of what might happen. I'd guess "right in the middle" means that they're not totally randomly scattered... but they're not SO clustered, or so evidently in line, that the radiologist can say "Oh yes, these should be biopsied." Thus the watchful waiting. They'll look at them again in 6 months, and see if they're the same, or if they've clustered together more, or formed more of a definite pattern. Good luck - hope things turn out well for you. PJH
