Q: allergic reaction to doxil

My mother had a severe allergic reaction to doxil. They lowered the infusion rate and she appeared to be going into analphylactic shock.  She had a severe rash, itching, couldn't breath or talk, facial swelling and other side effects.  They will not use doxil and want to talk about other possible drugs for stage two IDC.  Has anyone heard of such a severe response?  I have looked up the drug and my mother was advised of the possible side effects.  We were not ready for what happened.

Taxol was going to be the last treatment after four rounds of AC.  Since the adriamycin caused heart problems my mother then was given doxil.  Where else can I research other possible chemo drugs?

I am going to talk to the doctor this week about my mother's case. Any suggestions?

Hi - Only your mother's doctor knows enough specifics of her case to be able to recommend specific drugs; so, I wouldn't recommend you try to research chemo drugs yourself, as I fear you don't have enough information or knowledge to come up with good conclusions. AC + T is a standard treatment for stage II IDC; but there are many others, as well. If you just want some background about what's out there, please check our chemo FAQS for information on all of the most common drug combinations used to treat breast cancer.

When you talk to the doctor, just make sure you get the information you want/need before you leave the office; if you don't understand something, keep asking till you do. And if you're not trusting this doctor, or having an unsatisfactory experience, ask for another doctor. Stage II IDC is a very, very common diagnosis; and an anaphylactic reaction to chemo is also quite common; as are adriamycin-induced heart issues. So there has to be a Plan B (and Plan C, and D) out there... and I assume the doctor will present you with the next options when you meet. Good luck - PJH

Good, I'm glad you like and trust the doctor. That's a big plus. I'm sure you'll work things out together, for your mom. PJH

I went into anaphylactic shock twice with Taxol, twice with Taxotere, and twice with Doxil.  It was awful.  My husband made the doctor search for something else, and at that time (this was in early 2008) there was a new synthetic chemo in trials that I took.  22 pound tumor removed April 2008.  My oncologist's name is Siva Yadlapati of Baton Rouge, Louisiana if your mother's doctor would like to give him a call.
