Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, July 04, 2008 TiaLit01 asks

Q: Do you have to be a certain age in order to get breast cancer?

My name is Tia and I'm a 15 year old girl. One day I had just gotten out of the shower and 1 of my breast was feeling sore, I thought about but not that much because I know I'm going through puberty and my breast are going to hurt from time to time. But the next day after I got out the shower again I was massging my sore breast and I felt a lump, I called my mom and she is going to take me to the doctor. Should I be worried?

Tia, it's always good to notice changes in your breasts - so kudos to you for doing that, and for telling your mom, too. But the soreness you describe doesn't sound like a breast cancer symptom. And at your age, lumps in your growing breasts can be quite common. So the answer is - go to the doctor to totally set your mind at ease, but no, if I were you, I wouldn't worry. Have a great weekend- PJH
