Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, March 03, 2011 Angel asks

Q: Should I be worried about a small, painless but itchy rough patch around my left nipple?

Ever since the beginning of fall, I have noticed a tiny dry and rough patch on my left nipple, but I thought it was just due to dry skin so I didn't take too much time to notice it. Now, it's almost spring, and unless I put moisturizer on it, it becomes a bit flaky and uncomfortably itchy. It does not redden and there is no discharge, but whenever it is really dry, the nipple on my breast becomes almost flat and pruny, otherwise it would look normal. I am 18 years old. Could it also be due to dehydration? I want to research a bit before making an official appointment with a doctor. Thanks!

It could be dehydration.  It could be eczema.  Although unlikely, it also could be a form of cancer called Paget's Disease of the Breast, which has a scaly rash on the nipple as its main symptom.  Please don't panic because I doubt that Paget's would get better with moisturizer.  However, a doctor can diagnose that exact cause of the rash and recommend the best cream.  If you had just noticed this rash, I'd say use unscented skin care products, a good moisturizer, and other common sense home remedies for dry skin.  However, since this has been a problem since the fall, letting a doctor take a look is a good idea.
