Q: Post mastectomy pt. now has lymphoedema & can't afford compression sleeves.

Post mastectomy pt. now has lymphoedema & can't afford compression sleeves.  They are not covered by Medicare or Medicaid.  She is a handicapped person & works as much as she can at a work shop for handicapped.  Is there an alternative for the sleeves such as ace bandage or any other solution for her to be treated and keep this under control?

Hi Carole - If she had a mastectomy, and Medicare paid for it, then Medicare has to pay for lymphedema treatment - it's a federal law. Including the sleeve. If she didn't have a mastectomy while on Medicare, please have her talk to a PT who's a lymphedema specialist to get suggestions. Also, your hospital may have a fund for just this kind of need - ask if they get money from Komen for the Cure, which will often pay for some of cancer treatment for women who can't afford it. Good luck - PJH
