Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, September 25, 2008 nickie asks

Q: I have a lump under my arm and it won't go away could it be breast cancer?

It started out kinda painful but now it is just there and it won't go away it has been there for almost a month. The reason I am worried is because breast cancer and other cancers run in my family. If its not cancer do you know what it might be?

Hi Nickie: It could be an infected lymph gland; sometimes swollen glands under your arm are a sign of infection elsewhere in your body. This seems reasonable, especially since it started out painful, which usually breast cancer isn't. However, with a history of BC in your family, I'd definitely get this checked out. It's always good to be aware of changes in your breast, and have a doctor take a look at any lumps that don't come and go in synch with your period. Good luck - PJH
