I have extremely severe emetophobia and have just been diagnosed with IDC. Waiting to schedule lumpectomy/sentinel node biopsy. In the event I do need chemo, is there a good anti-emetic regimen available? I am deathly afraid of vomiting!

Hi Miriam,
I have had a lot of chemo and have only vomitted once! Your oncologist can prescribe all kinds of thing for you - during the worst of my chemo I was on several different drugs and my nausea was very well managed. I kept a chart and made sure to take all the drugs at the right time. After you have chemo, take the anti-emetics as prescribed and before you start to feel sick. That should help a lot.
Good luck and take good care-
Laurie
Miriam, I never knew there was a word for that -I'm an emetophobe, too! I never vomited once during chemo - just felt mildly queasy. Also didn't need any medicine. But I know women doing chemo currently who say the new anti-emetic meds are FABULOUS. Be sure to stress to your providers that you absolutely positively DO NOT want to feel nauseous, and then, as Laurie says, be sure to take the medicine before you feel anything - it's a preventive, not a cure. Think positive - you might sail right through without even needing chemo. And if you need chemo, you might sail right through that, too, without feeling sick. Best of luck -PJH
