Q: stage 1 2 cm idc grade 3 her2+3 in chemo 4th round of 6. Not sure I want to do 6 radiation

Stage 1  2 cm idc grade 3 her2+3, in chemo 4th round of 6. Not sure I want to do 6 weeks of radiation treatments, concerned it is over the heart and could do damage and just tired of this all. Is it really necessary? Lumpectomy first and then another to get clear margins  w/ 2 nodes removed came back clear

Daisy, ask your oncologist what the statistics for recurrence are for you, with and without radiation. If it's not going to make a huge difference, you might consider skipping it. However, if it IS going to be significant - then I'd say pull up your socks, grit your teeth, and do it. And, trust me, after chemo, radiation is a total piece of cake. You're getting the worst of treatment over with now. Best of luck to you - PJH

thank you so much for your response. I will ask my onc on the next visit. The 1st week after chemo is always tough and I get low, I will pull my socks up and do the right thing!

Daisy, as PJ says talking to your doctor can help you understand the statistics for survival rates with and without radiation for your type of cancer.  I understand your concern about heart damage.  I had a similar concern, but with modern radiation equipment, they can control the depth of the radiation, and it shouldn't affect your heart.  Most people find radiation easier than chemo.
