Q: birads 4b and dr says not to worry

i am 41 and found a round nodule in my breast that did not change in months and
is hard.  it was different than the cysts i had aspirated and also looked different
on the ultrasound.  my breasts are extremely dense so an ultrasound was needed
after mammo.  now the surgeon suggests a lumpectomy.  these are my findings:
dilated ducts, an irregular tubular shaped structure of soft tissue echogencity that
extends towards subareolar region with somewhat stellate appearance.  possibility
of infiltration of soft tissue ducts is of concern.  no shadowing or enhancement.
impression:  dilated ducts, concering for ductal infiltration with soft tissue echogenicity at site of palpable abnormality.  lumpectomy recommended.  birads 4b classification.
it has taken over a week to even schedule the surgery....maybe the doctor isnt worried?

Hi - A birads 4b classification is "moderately suspicious" for cancer, so some sort of tissue sampling is warranted to determine whether this is cancer. Cancer is generally slow-growing, and there's often much waiting involved - for surgeries, for appointments – so I wouldn't read anything positive into your 1-week wait, unfortunately. It's tough being on the fence like this, I know. But try to keep busy, stay positive, and I hope your lumpectomy results show NO cancer. Good luck - PJH
