Doctor said they found a lymph node under my left breast 2 1/2 cm

My mom is 76 and she had a mammagram then an ultrasound and they saw a 2 1/2 cm lymph node under left breast am worried. Could this also be from an infection or a recent illness or does it mean definitely cancer.

Please respond.

Thank You

Sue, don't panic - take a DEEEEP breath and realize it could be lots of things. Yes, it COULD be cancer. It could also be an infection. It could be scar tissue they're mis-reading. It could be any number of things... Only your mom's doctor can make that determination and diagnosis.

What should you do? First, help your mom make sure she's getting good treatment. Have they given her a next step (biopsy, meeting with a specialist)? If not, press for some followup. Once the next step is scheduled, stay calm and take things one step at a time. If it's cancer, understand that cancer is no longer a death sentence; it's very often something you live with. LIVE with. And just take it from there.

There are millions of women who've survived breast cancer - even if your mom gets that diagnosis (and at this point, it's no certainty), her chances of surviving are excellent, and improving all the time. Best of luck to you both -PJH

Sue, I'm no medical expert, and please understand that no one can make diagnoses on this site. Only your mother's doctor can determine if your mother's case involves an infection, cancer or something else.

But, I can share what I was told when I went to a lymph node therapist for PT after all the nodes in my right armpit were removed following a mastectomy, and I was experiencing lymphedema.

If I recall correctly, there are lymph nodes spread all about the body - armpits, chest, neck, abdomen & groin.

I also know from problems that my mother had, that the nodes can swell, as they checked hers often and were considered to grow from large to extra large.  They thought she had lymphoma, but she tested negative for it.

Many things can make lymph nodes swell, as they collect bacteria and other agents.  Sometimes it's a precursor for something bad, and sometimes it's nothing (as they deemed in my mom's case). In any case it's worth getting more info from your doctor.

Hope my insight from personal experience helps a bit & that things turn out well for both you and your mother. Please check in with your mom's doctor and keep us posted.
