Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, February 12, 2010 Kathleen asks

Q: Does taking Arimidex have any effect on Lymphedema?

I had read a recent medical report that stated Arimidex has a bad effect on lymphedema. Does anyone have any information?  I haven't been able to locate the report again. ( I wish I had book marked the page).  It also said it causes hair loss.  Is the hair loss permanent?

Kathleen, I haven't seen anything about the Arimidex/lymphedema connection, and don't find anything when I Google. You'd probably want to ask your oncologist about this, or perhaps whomever the "lymphedema expert" is at your health facility - perhaps part of the PT staff. As for hair loss, yes, Arimidex can cause hair loss due to its effect on estrogen. Once you stop taking it, most women who've had hair thinning report their hair grows back; perhaps not as thick as before, but it does get thicker. Good luck - PJH

Hi!  Thank you for answering my question.  I have since found my answer on the Arimidex.com web site and also on the Astra-Zenica web site. Arimidex prescribing information sheet lists ADVERSE REACTION "In the early breast cancer (ATAC) study, the most common side effects occuring in women taking Arimidex included....peripheral edema and lymphedema, regardless of causality. (6.1)

The web site also has a IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION ABOUT ARIMIDEX  section. It states " The most common side effects seen with Arimidex include hot flashes....osteoporosis, fracture, swelling of arms/ legs, insomnia, and headache."

I will be taking this information to my Occupational Therapist since she also wasn't aware of this side effect. There is also a blog page from people who have had experience with this side effect from the medication. Hopefully, I can change medications and get partial relief from lymphedema and maybe, help someone else suffering.

Thanks for checking back, Kathleen. I'll add that information to my list of Arimidex side effects. Knew about the others, but not the swelling... Hope Femara or Aromasin (or perhaps tamoxifen) does the trick. PJH

Women are always a great support to one another, Kathleen - at least in my experience. I was helped by so many when I went through treatment - I feel honored to have the chance to "pay it forward" and help those going through the heart of the cancer experience. Thanks for connecting- PJH
