Sunday, July 19, 2009 michaela asks

Q: can i have brest cancer at age 13?

Im 13 years old and i have a lump in my right brest. It does not hurt and i have not told anyone about it. I also have not noticed any sign of it getting bigger. Im scared it is brest cancer, but there is no family history of brest cancer, but my cousin did say she felt a lump in her brest too. Is it possible for me to have brest cancer? and im too scsred to tell anyone. and going to the doctors scares me because i have a male doctor. What should i do?

Michaela, please stop worrying. Breast lumps at your age are completely natural - as you say, your cousin has one, too. They're a sign of puberty; your breasts are growing. Please read our Teen Guide to Breast Development. It'll help you understand the changes you're going through, and that you'll cotinue to go through for several years.

It's good you're learning to be aware of changes in your breasts. As you get older, it's the best way to safeguard yourself against cancer. But at age 13 - well, the chances of you having breast cancer are way, WAY less than one in a million. So don't stress. But if you can't stop worrying - please tell your mom. She loves you, and she'll help you through this. Good luck - PJH

Do not be afraid to tell someone . Altest tell your mother she will help you and if she thinks its breast cancer you will go to the doctors and you will be examined by a female doctor .don't be afraid its probably nothing.

Thanks so much - it's always good to hear feedback from peers, or others who may have gone through the same scare... PJH
