Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 Tonya asks

Q: I feel a weird lump, have pain and see an indent in my left breast. should i be concerned?

I had a mammogram about 4 years ago, and it showed nothing.

The doctor told me it was from too much caffeine.

It that was the case, why don't i have same symptoms

in my right breast? Since then, the pain feels worse and

now there is an indent next to the nipple when i raise up

my left arm. What does this mean?

I am scared to go back to the doctor.

Tonya, please don't be afraid to go to the doctor; it doesn't do you any good to worry about what MIGHT be happening in your breast. Why not find out for sure? Breast lumps, so long as they're permanent and don't come and go in synch with your period, should always be checked. Breast cancer isn't usually painful, but lumps should definitely be checked. So set aside your fears, and call the doctor for an appointment, OK? Don't put it off; you'll just make youself more stressed. Good luck - PJH

Hi Tonya!

Don't be afraid to go to your doctor you have the right to be concerned and be proactive in regards to your healthcare.  If you have a lump then most definitely have a mammogram and ultrasound done so you can have peace of mind - and if it's just this particular doctor that has you concerned, find another because you are entitled to know what it is if anything.  Most likely it is nothing - as PJ said most lumps don't hurt, but I also know from my own experience that sometimes you think pain is there just cause you feel it (maybe you've been squishing and squeazing it - I know I did all that!) but you need to get to the bottom of this.  I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're of certain age, or cancer runs in your family - then you should be having yearly mammograms just for diagnostic purposes.  That way you'll have a baseline mammo to go off of and they can track any changes.

Make an appointment - you'll feel better once you know for sure.

Good luck!
