Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, March 15, 2010 friend asks

Q: Hi, I have another question regarding surgery tmw

my friend has her bilateral mastectomy scheduled tmw. we just found out today when I went in the office to get another page of path report that they will be taking sentinal node out 1 hour before mastectomy. If anything is found, will she have to make any decisions right then? I find that hard to believe but have to ask.

thank you again!!!!

I don't know what decisions are left to make once the decision to have a bilateral mastectomy is made unless they are considering the possibility of taking out more lymph nodes than just the sentinel node if it is cancerous.  I hope they will not ask her to make a decision at the last minute when she is stressed and hasn't had time to think things through.

She will probably sign papers authorizing the doctor do make decisions based on what he finds in the surgery using his best judgement.  I didn't expect to have a radical mastectomy, but when the surgeon found two unexpected tumors on my chest wall, he took the adjoining muscle and saved my life.  It's good to do research and try to make the best decisions, but there may come a point where she just has to trust the surgeon.

I hope all goes well for her tomorrow.

Thank you! all went as well as it could. Nothing found in sentinel node!!! Such a relief :) We won't know the road she will travel yet but I am so glad I found this site and all the info so far.

thank you all for your assistance!!!

I know there will be more but for right now I'm just letting the relief flow though.
