Q: do you still need arimidex after a hysterectomy?

hi again.

would my friend need Arimidex after a hysterectomy? She is on Tamoxifen now after a bilateral mastectomy in March. My original thinking was after hysterectomy she will be in menopause but why would you still need the Arimidex after all that is removed. sorry if this is a stupid question, just reading too much maybe, I am confusing myself!

Not stupid at all - it's all confusing! Your body continues to make estrogen, even after ovaries, etc. are removed. The adrenal gland still makes a bit, so it's important to continue to block it. Arimidex works better than tamoxifen on estrogen produced by sources other than the ovaries, so Arimidex is probably what she'll be recommended. That said - it can come with some fairly obnoxious side effects (joint pain), and some women choose not to take it, if their risk of recurrence is already fairly low. Hope this helps - PJH
