Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: PARTIAL BREAST RADIATION THERAPY STUDY ***** I NEED HELP DECIDING IF I WANT TO PARTICIPATE*******

I AM 53 years old and have DCIS, Grade 3.  Had wide excision lumpectomy Aug 21 then another surgery Sept 11 to gain a  clean margin.

I have been asked if I want to take part in a study where I would receive external beam radiation twice a day, 6 hours apart for 5 days to only the area where my tumor was.  I need help deciding.  This is a radomized study where 50% of the women will receive the standard RT (16 treatments over 16 days to the entire breast) and the other 50% will receive the partial treatment.

Has anyone had partial radiation?  How long ago?  What were and how severe were the side effects?  Have you had recurrence?   What kind of cancer was the recurrent and was it in the same site or different?

My DCIS is HER2 negative so tomoxifin is not an option.  I have a pretty strong family history of breast cancer as well: 2 aunts, one deceased from BC, and a grandma deceased from BC.  I am just not sure what to do...PLEASE help with any info that you feel is pertinent.

Thanks.

Hi - This sounds like a variation on MammoSite or brachytherapy; if so, please read our post detailing one woman's experience with MammoSite for a good first-person account. Now, this is only her experience, and it was several years ago; advances have been made since then. Also, it's no longer being approached as a "study," since it's being widely used, so I'm not exactly sure what they're offering you here; but take a look.

It boils down to, do you want to go the "tried and true" route, something that many years of data has proven to work? Or are you willing to take a chance for the advancement of cancer research? Tough choice, I know; and only you can make it. Good luck - PJH
