Q: Sharp pain in nipples

I started yesterday having pains in both of my breast similar to the pains I get in my breast near my period, even though I'm a few weeks from having another period.Today those pains were replaced with very painful stinging on both of my nipples.I don't breast feed or on menopause,so please give me an answer.

Katharine, since this pain is similar to what you feel before a period, there is a good chance there is something hormonal going on.  Usually we reassure a woman that there is no need to go to the doctor for a nipple problem that has lasted only a few days.  However, your use of the phrase "very painful" makes me think that you might want to go to the doctor sooner to see if there is some cream or treatment that might give you some pain relief.  Because the problem is on both sides, it seems unlikely that there is an infection or cancer present.  If you wanted to try home remedies first, you could wear a soft bra made of a fabric that breathes and switch to laundry and bath products for sensitive skin.  However, if the problem persists through your period, please make an appointment to see the doctor.  ANY breast change that lasts longer than a month needs to be checked out by a doctor.
