Hi Jules - A lot depends on what type of reconstruction your mom is having. Please read our body tissue reconstruction FAQS, and link from there to other reconstruction FAQS; I think you'll find them very helpful.

In general, it's fairly serious surgery; she'll probably have drains that need tending to for several weeks. She'll need help bathing (as she won't be able to shower or get the incisions wet); and she'll need help with things like washing dishes, cooking, doing laundry, etc., till she has better use of her arms. I'd assume she'll be in the hospital for a few days, at least.

Please don't freak out; you'll get through this. Many women have this surgery, and do just fine. Depending on her age and general health, I'd think she'd be feeling a lot beter ithin a couple weeks or so. Good luck - PJH
