Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, March 19, 2009 msmewhite asks

Q: i've noticed a lump in my breast about a month ago that has not went away. what should i do?

I noticed a lump in my breast about a month ago. It has'nt gone anywhere. At first I thought it might be from the milk ducts in my breast. I'm 42 and had a baby last july. I breast fed about 2 and 1/2 months. My son is now a week from 8mos old . He's been off the breast for about 6 months. The lump is here every day. Should I be concerned enough to seek a dr.?Breast cancer does not run in my family. My mom's mother died of lung cancer. My dad's mom died of throat cancer. I"m feeling tired and less active ,but I think I'm just getting down on myself because I don't know what to do.

I would definitely make an appointment to see a doctor, as you've had this lump for longer than two weeks and it has not gone away.  There are a number of things that could have caused this - and not all cancer related.  Either way it's best to get it checked out for peace of mind!

Good luck!

Yes, of course you should go get it checked. Even though breast cancer doesn't run in your family cancer runs in your family. Do you get yearly mamograms. Make sure they also do an ultrasound. I would also recommend an MRI if you can get your insurance to do it. Breast cancer does run in my family. I am a two time survivor. Hopefully it is nothing. But run don't walk to the phone please. My daughter also gets lumps. She has Kaiser. Her doctor wants her to get two MRI's a year because of our family history but she could not afford it. The lumps turned out to be nothing. But another one just showed up. She is getting better insurance in about a month a will be able to get the MRI. My doctor said in younger people she is 28 the MRI is the only thing the will show cancer. Please write to me if you need to talk clc303@aol.com. She has two young kids 6 and a 3 year old Autistic son. It could be because you were breast feeding. Sometimes it is because you have starting having a period again. But please go get checked. I see you stopped breast feeding. At first mine were just cysts so if it is just that it is important to keep an eye on that also. Check into if any cousins have had cancer also. I don't want to scare you but please get checked. I have also had Thyroid Cancer twice. Ovarian Cancer runs in my family also.

Take care,

Cindy

SmileDearheart, I have 4 words for you.  They saved my life.  GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!!

You have a baby to raise.  It's better to know what is there so that you can make whatever decisions you need to make.  If it turns out that it's nothing, so much the better, but remember ALWAYS take care of YOU first.  Everything else will fall into place. God Bless.
