Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, December 26, 2008 Rena, Community Member, asks

Q: I have a painful breast lump that just appeared the other day. What could this be?

I am currently in my 10th month of taking Loestrin24 Fe birth control and recently I have developed breast lumps, which according to the pamplet is normal.  The other day I woke up with a breast lump that is very painful and red.  I am 28 and have been told to wait until aftermy next period to see if this goes away, but I am worried as I do have a family history of breast cancer.

Hi Rena: A breast lump that's painful, red, and appears suddenly doesn't sound like a standard side effect of taking birth control pills. It sounds more like an infection. Could be a cyst, or an infected milk duct, an abscess... there's no telling without having it examined. A breast lump that's painful, appears suddenly, and looks infected wouldn't be a typical breast cancer symptom. You're very young for breast cancer, statistically, even with your family history. So I'd go get it checked out ASAP, but wouldn'tstress too much about it being cancer, OK? Best of luck - PJH
