Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: I am 26 yrs. old with a painless lump (looks like swollen lymph node) in armpit. Is this a concern?

I am 26 years old. About a year ago I noticed my right armpit was swollen. My doc. says its from lifting my daughter which I find hard to believe because I don't lift her as often as when she was a baby. I also thought that if the swelling was due to carrying her, it would start to decrease as the lifting decreased, and it isn't. She is now 3. Anyways, I also have a lump in my right breast which after 2 ultrasounds, they think its ok. I now, almost 3 weeks ago, noticed a lump (looks like swelling of a lymph node) in my armpit. It is painless and doesn't move. I do not have a cold nor had a cold recently. It also seems that there might be some slight thickening on the outer side of my left breast (when compared to the texture of my outer right breast), and also maybe a pea size lump but not sure if its a normal lump or not. Is this something to be concerned about or am I just a worry wart?

Hi - If you're experiencing issues in both breasts, it's not likely to be breast cancer in both breasts - that just doesn't happen, or only very rarely. I'm glad you've been paying attention and had an ultrasound; and I'm glad they say you're OK. Now, though, with a new lump, you simply have to take it seriously and get it checked out, too. Ask about fibrocystic breasts; this is something a lot of young women deal with, a kind of chronic lumpiness. I hope things turn out well for you - best of luck. - PJH

I was diagnosed at 26 with bc. I actually did have 1 lump on the right and 2 on the left. I found my lump on my own and my OBGYN said it just felt like alot of fatty tissue it was prolly nothing. Which in your case maybe nothing but as you've been doing go get the new lump checked out and make sure its nothing of concern. Never let anyone tell you ur to young. GL! Take care
