Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, December 06, 2009 Cressida asks

Q: Do dairy products cause breast cancer?

I was diagnosed with beast cancer in 2007. Luckily, I've been cured and can only hope there isn't a recurrence. I'm trying to follow a healthy lifesyle and would like to know how much truth there is in the belief that consumption of dairy products, like milk, cheese, butter leads to breast cancer.

Hi Cressida - Nice to hear from you again. There's no data that shows dairy products cause breast cancer, or its recurrence. There's SOME data that shows a high-fat diet may encourage breast cancer, if you have hormone-receptive BC; there's more estrogen in your body's fat than in muscle, so if you're overweight, you'll probably have more estrogen in your system, which can be used to fuel cancer cells. So it's a reach, but if you ate a lot of high-fat cheese and drank a lot of full-fat milk, which led you to gain weight, then I suppose you could say those particular dairy products weren't helping you stay cancer-free. But it's not the dairy per se, it's the fat. Low-fat dairy products should be fine. Hope this helps - PJH

Thanks so much for the reply. I do take low fat dairy products in addition to which I take one tablet of Osteocare daily and a once a month Bonviva 150 mg tablet. I suffer from spondilosis and my recent bone density test revealed a slight weakness in the wrists. The back, hip and legs density was fine.

Keep up with your drugs, Cressida - I know they can be a pain, but I'll bet they're helping you. Be well - PJH
