Sheryl, take heart - IDC is the most common form of breast cancer, and oncologists are VERY familiar with all kinds of treatments. Unfortunately, no invasive breast cancer is considered "curable" in the common sense; but for the vast majority of women, it's treated once and disappears, never to reappear. Take a look at this piece on the prognosis for various types of breast cancer.

IDC, like any breast cancer, would most commonly spread to your liver, bones, brain, and lungs. However, your doctor will be keeping a close eye on you for years,so don't stress too much. You may (or may not) have chemo; may (or may not) have radiation, and long-term drug therapy. Whatever treatment you have, understand that it's lessening your risk for recurrence. Millions of women have been down this path, Sheryl - stay connected here, because we can all help you. You might want to start by reading this piece on IDC.

Best of luck with the mastectomy. Remember: time heals. -PJH
