Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, December 28, 2008 TheCoolChick asks

Q: Tamoxifen for High Risk Breast Cancer Con't.

I am new to this and dont know how this works, so I apologize for posting again.

To answer your question, I was told that doing more biopsies would cause future imaging problems such as scar tissue so before they do anything more along those lines they want a year to pass to do another MRI to have it to compare to last years. They followed my U/S pictures for 24 months (every 6 months) and b/c nothing looked different they chose to do it this way. From what I have been told with the new developments with the Tamoxifen, it will help reduce the density of my breasts and make imaging easier.

As for the vaginal bleeding and whatnot, I had a hysterectomy 2 yrs ago (BTW- I am 30) due to bleeding from fibroids.

I was wondering if there are any foods, drinks, etc that I should avoid while taking this medication. I am a daily coffee drinker, occasional beer drinker, etc.  Also, how do you deal with hot flashes? I guess I dont know what to expect from that end of things.

Thanks again!

Hi - You MAY find that either caffeine or alcohol or both make your hot flashes worse. Or they may not. At any rate, if anyone had a good treatment for hot flashes, they'd be rich! There's not much you can do about them. The doctor may offer you some antidepressants, as these supposedly help some women. Beware of "natural" over-the- countger remedies, as many contain estrogen, which is what you're trying to avoid.

As for weight gain, exercise, exercise, and watch what you eat - the usual drill. And depression: stay tuned in to your mind. If you feel yourself going in that direction, don't try to tough it out - let someone know.

Good luck, Cool - PJH
