Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Sarmi asks

Q: External changes in breasts, need ideas about new tests, what to tell doctor?

Left breast mole itches, shape and color change, entire nipple/areola area is now flat and droopy. Right breast feels larger firmer, irritating itching, deep searing pain around the entire left side of aerola bright red puckered and has tiny lumps, painful to palpate.  Can anyone suggest the best types of test to research before discussing this with my doctor?

Hi Sarmi- Since both breasts are affected, this sounds like it might be a hormonal issue, or an allergic reaction of some sort - breast cancer almost never presents active symptoms in both breasts at once. However, this is definitely something you need to have looked at, diagnosed, and hopefully treated. If you don't trust your doctor to know what to do, I'd suggest asking him/her for a referral to a breast specialist, OK? Good luck - PJH
