Because Arimidex has a lot of marketing dollars behind it, and a lot of money went into the research to develop it, so the manufacturer needed to recoup their investment; the generic brands are knockoffs, and thus didn't incur development costs, nor do they do much (ar any) advertising, I suspect. PJH,

Thank you for your reply.  Unfortunately, the Arimidex at my local pharmacy for $307 was also generic.  Any explanation?  Thank you!

Can't be generic if it's called Arimidex - that's a trademarked name of AstraZeneca, the original manufacturer. If it's called Arimidex, it IS Arimidex. It might say "compare to Arimidex," but generic anastrozole can't be called Arimidex... PJH

I'm sorry for the confusion.  It was the generic for Arimidex (I wasn't sure what the actual name of the drug was) that was $307 at my local pharmacy----with my small discount that they give.  Online at healthwearhouse.com it is $25.  This is such a large difference, that I wonder if it could possibly be legitimate.

Check and see if the online version is the correct dosage (1mg, usually); and if it's anastrozole. If so, it's the "right" drug. No telling how pure it is, or how it's made, or anything else... it's hard, isn't it, to decide whether to take a chance on a really cheap generic vs. a moderately priced one? Who knows what the manufacturers are doing?

I have to take the brand drug, Arimidex, because some of the inactive ingredients in the generic one are increasing my side effects (nausea and vomiting). I found out that my insurance requires $50 copay for the brand name and $25 for the generic form. However I found recently that if you are still looking to take Arimidex the company offers a $40 program, You have to have your prescription mailed/faxed to AstraZeneca together with your enrollement form completed and will have your monthly medicine delivered to your home. The website for enrollement via their website or via phone 1-800-637-3636 and the fax number is 18006983759. The program is called ARIMIDEX direct, it really works, and most of the ladies in my support group also took advantage of this program.
