Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, February 26, 2009 Virginia Hammet asks

Q: What do the numbers 23, 18 and 30 mean after a blood test?

I am an  80 year old woman in fair health.  I have a lumpectomy in 1994.  I have taken Armidex ever since.  I get mammograms as required.  They did  a needle biopsy last year. Now they tell me because of these numbers, I need to come inn for a blood test monthly. Does this mean the cancer is recurring and if so what are my options.

Sorry, Virginia, the information you give isn't complete enough to figure out what's going on. Those numbers could be cancer markers, liver function numbers... but hard to say.

I think your best bet is to ask your doctor exactly what these numbers measure; what the normal range for them is; and why you need to have them measured monthly. (S)he simply needs to clarify your situation with more info. Good luck - PJH
