Hi - Luckily, this sounds like a pretty straightforward diagnosis of the most common type of breast cancer, with the information you have so far. Chances are your mom will go through treatment and get back on the road to good health. She should be sure to let the doctor know about her lymphedema, if she hasn't already, as it may change her treatment somewhat. Hope she gets good news at her next visit about lymph node involvement, etc. Good luck to you both - PJH
Hi - If the cancer has traveled outside her breast to the lymph nodes under her arm, the treatment will probably involve chemo. If there's no "lymph node involvement" (the cancer is confined to her breast), she may be able to avoid chemo. During surgery, they probably did what's called a sentinel node biopsy, to find out if the nodes are involved; if you go with your mom to her appointment, ask if this was done (or is going to be done), OK? Because it's important information to have as her treatment plan is developed. Take care- PJH
