Hi Debbie: First, read our FAQS on aromatase inhibitors, including Arimidex. That'll give you a good overview. I can tell you that the most common side effects are loss of bone density, and aching joints. The bone density should be tracked; I'm sure your oncologist will fill you in on this. Many women get away without the aches; I hope you're one of the lucky ones. Write back if you have any more quesiotns - good luck. - PJH

I have been on Arimidix for 3.5 months and am suffering from severe joint pain.  The dr. says exercise will help with the pain but I am very active riding bike (20-50 miles at a time), swim, lift weights and attend zumba classes. The pain at times is unbearable.  Is there anything I can do/take to alleviate the pain.  My oncologist says an anti-depressant pill will help alleviate the hot flashes and joint pain.  Have you heard of this.  I am at the point of discontinuing the medicine.

Antidepressant (e.g., Effexor) should help with the hot flashes; never heard about it helping the joint pain. Far as I know, nothing will stop the joint pain; but you can help mask it with ibuprofen. Unfortunately, some women do get pretty severe joint pain from Arimidex; you'll have to balance quality of life vs. risk of recurrence. If your recurrence risk is already low, and Arimidex is really affecting your quality of life (which it sounds ike it is), you might very well decide to discontinue it. Good luck - PJH

I to have suffer with joint pain and bone pain. I am active but not as active as you. I would sit down and the pain just would raditate. My doc suggested taking Glucosamine-Chondroitin, and that helped with with my knee pain. I also found a study connecting arimidex and low levels of vitamin D, was tested and found it was low. Talk to your doc and about this because it helped me. catjo
