My 7mm tumor (infiltrating ductal carcinoma) was just under my left nipple. I read an article that said that a mastectomy is recommended if the tumor is under the nipple. Fact or fiction?

Cruzer, I believe this is fiction. For cosmetic reasons, the surgeon might say that a mastectomy with reconstruction would give you a better result; but ask about oncoplasty, which is rebuilding the tumor area removed during a lumpectomy, right during the surgery. If they have to take your nipple it's more difficult, but I would think they could at least fill the "divot," especially since, at 7mm, the tumor is pretty small. Then again, there's no telling till they get in there how large it actually is, and how much they have to remove around it to get clean margins. I'd still try the lumpectomy first; you can always have a mastectomy later, if necessary. PJH
