Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: Hair loss post-chemo

It has been five years since I was treated with chemo for breast cancer, and 2 years since ending Herceptin treatment.  I have taken daily Arimidex for five years and Boniva once a month.  I have been in menopause for 12 years, being now 56.  In the last few months I have noticed that my hair has thinned considerably.  Could it be due to Butcher's broom, an herb I started 2 months ago to help with lymphedema, or SolarRaze, a topical gel I have used for a month on my face to prevent skin cancer?  Could one or both of these interact with one or both of the prescription drugs I am taking?  Thanks!

Hi Jan - While thinning hair isn't listed as a side effect of Arimidex, anecdotal evidence suggests that many women do start to experience thinning hair after several years of being on Arimidex. I think that would be the culprit, rather than the herbs or gel. I'd speak to your oncologist, see if (s)he might refer you to a dermatologist. Also, I hope you've told him or her about the herbs; it's always wise to discuss any complementary self-treatments with your oncologist, just to make sure about any drug interactions. Good luck - PJH
