Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, November 20, 2010 ms mccoy asks

Q: I've had a sharp intermittent pain in one breast from the top inner side down to my nipple for 5 days. It seems to be associated with certain arm movements, but not always. I'm 24 years old. Thank you

Hi - This could be a hormonal issue; or the first sign of a cyst or fibroadenoma, both symptoms of fibrocystic change, which is a non-serious (but annoying) condition very common in women in their 20s. Please read our post on breast pain for more information about what this might be, and whether/when to see a doctor about it. Basically, if it lasts longer than a month, it qualifies as a breast change, and you should see someone; and certainly if it gets worse quickly, or if your breast seems infected, see someone sooner. Best of luck - hope it goes away on its own soon. PJH

Thank you so much for your quick response. I have no other symptoms that would lead me to believe its an infection, so I guess I'll just have to wait it out. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to alleviate the pain? (over the counter medicine, creams, or heat/cold?) Thanks again.

You could try an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory to see if it helps.  Since the pain is triggered by certain movements, this could be muscle related.  I don't think there is a cream that would help, but the act of massaging in a lotion or cream might relieve muscle spasms.  Experiment with home remedies you use for other pains and see what helps.  As long as you do not exceed recommended doses or stay on pain relievers for an extended time, you should be OK.  If the pain is severe, I'd suggest giving the doctor a call on the next business day.
