Q: Breast reconstruction process

                                 Breast Reconstruction Process

I had a bi-lateral mastectomy, because I was diagnosed with DCIS for the second time in my right breast. I had surgery on April 22, 2009. My left side keeps building up fluid. After having the drains taken out within a few days I was back in the plastic surgeons office having the drain put back in on my left side. I had the drain taken out after having it in for 22days. It's been 6 days now and I can feel and see the left side protruding like the fluid is building up again. I'm wondering is the fluid ever going to stop draining? I feel like the plastic surgeon is getting frustrated with me and the situation, because it's a set back in the reconstruction process. As a patient what can I do?

This must be really frustrating; you're all set to get going with reconstruction, and your body just isn't cooperating. As to what you could do, I'd guess if any of your health care team knew, they'd tell you; I'm sure they're just as anxious to keep you on track, schedule-wise, as you are to remain there.

I know other women have had this problem; for some it can go on for months, before finally spontaneously disappearing. If you had radiation for your DCIS, it could be your lymph nodes have become scarred, and aren't working effectively. You might try consulting a lymphedema specialist; even though this isn't lymphedema, some massage, of the type they do for lymphedema, might get that fluid moving out of your breast and back where it belongs, in your lymph system. Good luck - hope you get some relief soon. PJH

Thank you so much for sharing this comment with all of us, this is the same problem that I'm having. I know in the pass with my other surgeries durning the reconstruction, doing tai chi/and alone with yoga help keep the fluid moving. However, due to the newness with my last surgery, my dr. does not want me to do any of those things before 8 wks, so needless to say the fluid is just building up. So I'm just stuck.Cry

Any way it helps to hear that you are not alone in your problems.

Hi newstart09,

Just wanted you to know that things are working out just fine. After 8 and half wks from my last surgery in may, my dr finally let me start doing my taichi wk out. And he also gave me an rx to go to a massage theraries. She is great she is helping with all of the scar tissue build up that I have problems with. She is also teaching me how to do it at home, so I can truly see great improvement. Sad to say she also has breast cancer. The dr has give me the go ahead to get back to normal in all of my daily actions. So I've started to look for work, and drive and just every day normal things. I didn't know if I would every get to this point, but here we are finally we can get back to looking for a house. That's what we were doing when all of the cancer things happened.

Please let me know how things are working out for you. I'm sure things are going alone just fine, but when we are right in the middle out it. We feel like the bad is never going to end, but it does and life get's even better.

Have a great day and keep in touch.

Hi Stepaheda,

I'm doing great after having my implants put in on August 18, 2009 compared to after having the bi-lateral mesectomy. I didn't have a lot of pain at all I was so glad. I'm able to drive but, i'm just taking it easy. If  I do to much my arms get tired so I'm just taking it easy. I met with my Dr. on this Friday to have the dressings taken off. I'll find out if I can go back to work in Sept. I was disappointed, because the fluid build up on my L side caused my skin to stretch and drop when i had the expanders in. The Dr didn't drain the fluid as often as he should have so now my L side is larger than my R side. He did say he would fix it during my surgery but, he didn't. I'm just wondering is he going to fix it to where they look as even as possible or what. He is also going to do the nipples later. I'll fined oput if he is going to tatoo them or what. After having a lumpectomy on my R side my chest was already bigger on my L side. I just didn't think I would have to deal with the same issue after having the implants put in. Oh, well I can't complain I'm thankful to be cancer free. Wishing you the best on finding a job and your new home! take care and God Bless you and your family! Stay in touch!

Hi Newstart09,Smile

I am just over joyed to hear that you are doing fine. It sounds like every thing is going just great, cool!!

Don't worry the dr will fix everything when he go back in for the nippling. Just concern your self with building up your immune system and getting stronger, don't over do. Give your body lot's of time to heal. I was just like you wanting to rush things, but my dr kept telling me to take it easy. I had lots of problems with my body producting too much scar tissues. So when he went back in to do the nippling, he had to replace the implant on the right side because it was 100cc smaller than the one on the left (oops)??, then due to the scar tissue problem, and the fact that they took too much muscle and tissue during the mascetomy they had to do grafting on the left breast it was a mess, and it was suppose to only be nippling. But I'm telling you all is fine now, I would have never thought in my wildes dreams that it would turn out so nice. Even my massage thearpies can not believe how nice my new breast look. And she is truly looking each wk that she has to work on them, because she is going to have the same surgery done in a few weeks.

Anyway please keep in touch,

Best Regards,

Stepaheda (luvnwinter@yahoo.com)anytime.

Hi Stepaheda,

I'm so glad your happy with your new breast. Thanks, for letting me know about the Dr. fixing everything during the nippling. I was frustrated because i didn't get the results I thought I would get. I was concerned because, the Dr. made me feel like he didn't care and he wasn't going to do anything to fix the problem. I'm glad you responded, and I feel so much better. I will stay in touch and e-mail you.

Thanks Again!

God Bless!
