Q: I have fibrocystic lumps in my breasts. Should I get the lumps removed?

After my mom died from breast cancer I had to beg a doctor for a referal.  I went for the mammogram and they found fibrocystic lumps.  I worry that these fibrous lumps can turn into breast cancer.  Should I get the lumps removed???

Darcey, depends on how many you have, I'd guess. And if they keep returning. I'm sure you don't want your life to be an endless round of surgeries... Fibrocystic material CAN develop into breast cancer, but it's not a sure thing. The medical field disagrees over how much of a breast cancer risk factor fibrocystic disease really is. I'd ask for a referral to a breast specialist, someone who'll spend enough time with you to go over all your risks and explain them, look at your mammogram, and help you make a thoughtful decision. Good luck - PJH
