I was told that I have some density in my left breast and that I need to go an take another mammogram. What does density mean? Does it mean I have breast cancer?

Lori, some women have naturally dense breasts, which makes it harder to pick up any abnormalities on a mammogram. Dense breasts do increase your risk of breast cancer somewhat; so in ordering this second mammogram, I'm sure your doctor is being extra-cautious with you—which is a good thing! Good luck - PJH
Fibroglandular tissue appears opaque on a mammogram (unlike fatty tissue, which appears clear), so fibroglandular tissue can sometimes hide other features in your breast. And you're right, Lee, early detection is key. An ultrasound is especially useful in identifying cysts, which are a common cause of breast lumps. Best of luck to you - hope your tests all come out negative. PJH
Lina, the radiologist who read your mammogram should refer you to a breast surgeon, who in turn will refer you to an oncologist. If no one's been in touch with you, try calling the social workers at the hospital where you were diagnosed; they'll help you "navigate the system" and get your treatment going. Good luck - PJH

Hi Lina - I'm so very sorry you've gotten this news. Unfortunately, the majority of us diagnosed with breast cancer have no known risk factors. We eat right, we exercise, we take care of ourselves, no family history, no symptoms... and we find out we have breast cancer. So you're not alone in this.
It'll take awhile for this to sink in, but once it does - you'll pick yourself up and go on. Please check out our breast cancer diagnosis page; it's full of great links to all kinds of information you'll need, as you go forward with surgery and treatment. And please come back and visit here whenever you like - we're here to support you. Take care- PJH

lori i have the same finding with my mammogram they found fibroglandular densiy on my left breast and saw a 9mm bilobed nodule i beleive the fibroglandular density is when the radiologist can't see what he needs to see cause of the faty tissue so i am having an ultrasound done which is better they are being extra careful and that is good because early detection is what we need to treat if it is cancer.
