Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, December 10, 2010 Sarah-Lou asks

Q: Is indentation or 'dimpling' in the breast always cancer? Evem if it has been present and unchanged for many years? Please help!

I have a slight indentation just under my left areola, running to almost the bottom of the breast. I'm fairly sure it's always been there - my left breast is a little larger and less round than the right, I figured it was just a harmless imperfection. I happened to notice it more recently as I was getting changed under strong overhead lighting... Now reading about 'dimpling' I'm getting really worried! I self-examine my breasts regularly, and I can't feel any kind of lump, or see any other warning symptoms in the surrounding breast tissue. I can only really see it when I raise my arm, but it doesn't change/worsen when I tense my pectoral muscle, nor when I pull the skin of the breast upward. I am 29, no children, pretty active and healthy, and have no personal or family history of breast (or any other) cancer. I am going to make an appointment for a proper exam ASAP, but if anyone could offer any other explanations to calm my nerves I would be grateful. Thanks.

Sarah-Lou, any indentation/dimpling that's been present for years would simply be a natural part of your anatomy. It's only when the indentation appears suddenly that it's considered a cancer symptom. I'm glad you're seeing a doctor, but please don't worry, OK? I'm sure you'll get a clean bill of health. Best of luck to you - PJH
