Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, June 24, 2011 tinkin3 asks

Q: I am 52 yo, in the midst of menopause (confirmed by my doctor through bloodwork). During my annual exam, my doctor noticed that I have a swollen lymph node in my armpit. She recommended mammogram

and ultrasound, which was done last week. Today she phoned me to tell me that the findings did not indicate cancer, but she still wants me to follow up with a breast doctor. Is she being reactive, or can I just watch it until next year?

If your doctor wants you to see a breast specialist, I'd follow her recommendation.  Sometimes tests can rule out cancer for sure, such as if an ultrasound shows a cyst.  Sometimes the test will show features of a lump that suggest a high probability of cancer.   However, frequently even after imaging tests, doctors simply are not sure.  This is especially true for primary care doctors who do not deal with these as often. The breast specialist may want to do a biopsy or may want to watch a bit to see if it goes away on its own.
