Breast cancer concern

My Dr found a "mass" in my last mammogram. Then she did an ultra sound and now I will see a breast specialist. I AM PANICKING!! I have no symtoms what so ever.  There is no cancer in my family.  I am 48 eat healthy; had a total hysterectomy when I was 23 due to a miscarriage but I still worry about something is wrong.

My question, with my background of no cancer in my family, what is the aproximate percentage of me being at risk of getting breast cancer?

Thank you for your promt response

Hi Lora: PLEASE don't panic. Panic will get you nowhere; worry will get you nowhere. Both are entirely normal. Try to feel them, realize what they are—emotional, not based on fact—and try to let them go.

Happily, 85% of breast biopsies, for whatever reason, turn out to be normal. So even if the breast specialist orders a biopsy, keep that figure in mind.

About 75% of women who get breast cancer have absolutely no risk factors, so unfortunately, you can't put any stock in that. But if you DO have cancer—it's not a death sentence. There are millions of breast cancer survivors out there. It'll be a rock in your path—step over it. The path will still be there. And stay connected here.

Please let us know how your visit with the breast specialist turns out, OK? Good luck - PJH

Hi Lora, please don't panic, it will be ok.  Most often when cancer is found, there are no symptoms other than a possible lump unless it was found during routine mammos.

I myself was dx with breast cancer at 31 with NO history of cancer within my family at all.  Sometimes it is baffling, as there is no rhyme or reason.  I know lots of folks who have it run in their family, and plenty others who don't.   Breast Cancer can strike anyone at anytime and has become quite common - which is the good news, because we've made lots of medical advances in treating it, unlike 20+ years ago.  Cancer is no longer the death sentence it once was thought to be.

So try to relax a bit and wait and see what the specialist says.  Hopefully it will be good news.  Good Luck to you!

Angi
