Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 Cass asks

Q: should the same doctor do mammogram and sonogram send off results to lab and do the surgery

I went to a doctor who has a clinic called breast speialists.  He did mammogram, digital mammogram, and sonogram, and 2 biopsies.  Called me 2 days later with  news that 1 biopsy was good and 1 was cancer.  Now scheduled for breast MRI to determine exact size.  He also does the surgery as needed.  Do I need to see an oncologist or is this way

acceptable?  I need to know which way to turn next.

I've never heard of a setup like this, Cass. Usually the person who does the mammogram is different than the radiologist who reads it; that same radiologist might do the biopsy, but I've never heard of a radiologist performing a lumpectomy or mastectomy, nor have I heard of a breast surgeon doubling as a medical oncologist. If he/she is scheduled to do your tumor removal surgery, I'd go elsewhere. There's a reason doctors specialize in particular areas; it's so they can become really expert at what they do. I think a generalist, in this case, might not be the best person to oversee your treatment. Check out your local hospital for a recommendation. And take a look at this list of Comprehensive Cancer Centers, which are cancer centers designated by the federal government as being "bes tin class." Good luck - PJH
