Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, September 26, 2008 Sherri asks

Q: I am looking for research on patients diagnosed with two different types of breast cancer.

I was diagnosed in 2003 with invasive lobular in one breast and in 2007 with invasive ductal in other breast.  Both were very small with no lymph node involvement and were removed with lumpectomy surgery and followed by radiation treatment.  I took Tamoxifen for 4 years and now take Arimidex.  I have had genetic testing and do not carry the gene.  I have been able to find very little research on what proper treatment is for those that have two different types of breast cancer.

Sherri, it sounds like random bad luck to me. Since IDC and ILC are treated exactly the same, I don't believe there'd be any different kind of treatment you should pursue, having had both at once. And it sounds to me, with no node involvement, 4 years of tamoxifen, and now an aromatase inhibitor, that you're pursuing exactly the right treatment. So just follow the path you're on - that would be my advice. Good luck - PJH
