Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, July 30, 2009 katelynn asks

Q: What should i do?

i am 19 years old with no family history of breast cancer. My doctor said i have a hard lump in my breast. They took an ultra sound, and they took pictures and they gave me the option to get referred to general surgery to get a tissue sample or wait 6 months and get another ultrasound.

Katelynn, having a lump in your breast at your age isn't unusual; pease read our Teen Guide to Breast Development. The chance of you having breast cancer at age 19 is about 1 in 1 million. But only you know your ability to handle uncertainty and possible stress. Do you want to find out what the lump is now? If so, it would be a minmially invasive surgery. Want to wait? Then just be sure to keep your eye on it, and if the lump starts to grow, report that to your doctor. Another option is to wait a month (the duration of a menstrual cycle); it may very well disappear during that time. Good luck - PJH
