Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, December 19, 2010 Jenny777 asks

Q: My nipples are dry, cracked and the dry top layers are separated from each other and peel off leaving tender sore skin. I am now 34 yrs old and this has been a common issue since my son was born in 04

There is no itching, both nipples are effected and it only hurts when they are agitated such as when drying off and they peel or after sex. I've tried removing the dry skin but it's attached to sensitive nerves and burns! Lotion doesn't seem to help.

This isn't a breast cancer symptom, seeing as it affects both breasts and has been going on for so long. But you definitely need to see a doctor - it sounds VERY uncomfortable! If you've been to a dermatologist and haven't seen good results, ask for a referral to a breast specialist. It sounds to me like somehow, the oil glands in your areola and around your nipple aren't working right; hopefully a breast specialist can figure out why that's happening, and treat the cause, not just the painful symptoms. Best of luck to you - PJH
