Q: Emend anti-nausea drug side-effect

This is more a comment than a question. I wanted to let other breast cancer patients know about some unusual side effects from the anti-nausea drug Emend. (For those who may be unfamiliar with it, Emend is a three-pill series that is typically taken the day of, day after, and second day after each chemo treatment. It was described to me as an "extra layer" of anti-nausea, on top of what they put in the infusion...). After my first chemo treatment, I felt beyond exhausted and very emotional. One might reasonably assume that this was a normal physical and emotional reaction to the whole thing. With the second treatment. I felt that way day 1, then felt great day 2! THEN I realized that I had forgotten to take my second day of emend. I worked, rushed around, made dinner (in other words, felt that good...), then took the Emend. Within an hour, I was once again a soggy heap of misery! I didn't take the third pill for that cycle and asked the oncologist about it later that week. I was hoping to negotiate a half-dosage. She suggested that I stop taking it altogether, explaining that Emend does contain something that can affect brain chemistry, although that is an uncommon side effect. I completed the rest of my treatment (A & C) without the Emend, and felt relatively great. I suspect that this side effect goes under-reported, since it is reasonable to assume that extreme fatigue and emotional misery are natural responses to chemo. Just wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else. Best wishes to all! (btw, finished 6 month of chemo, 2 months of rads, double mastectomy, and am almost done w/ finishing touches on reconstruction!). Feeling good... :)

Thanks so much for sharing your experience here. There's nothing better, when you're suffering, than knowing that someone else has gone through the same thing, and can relate to what you're feeling. I'm glad you were able to bet through chemo without really needing the emend for nausea - and VERY glad that you're nearly through treatment! Take care- PJH
