Double Mastectomy after discovering small tumor in the other breast

Jim
08/16/09

my wife had a lumpectomy and radiation on her right breast 7 years ago. Last week they found a small (6mm) tumor on her other breast. The surgeon clearly leans toward a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. His feeling is that since my wife is 57, and this is the second time she has developed breast cancer, the mastectomy option may be the best choice. Comments?

Jim, I'm no doctor, but a double mastectomy comes with a lot of potential for other issues, chiefly, shoulder issues. Plus, reconstruction is great, but not a simple operation; or if not reconstruction, she might opt for a prosthesis, which also comes with issues. The surgeries themselves are all much more aggressive. If it were me, I'd try another lumpectomy. You can always take away more... but you can't go back and take away less.

Also, interesting fact: mastectomy lessens your risk for recurrence; with nearly all your breast tissue gone, you have a 90% chance of NOT having a recurrence. But a double mastectomy doesn't increase your 5-year survival rate. Just thought I'd add that to the mix as you try to make this decision...

Again, I AM NOT A DOCTOR. This is just my personal opinion. But, since you asked for comments... Good luck. this is always one of the toughest decisions, mastectomy vs. lumpectomy. Please read our post on mastectomy vs. lumpectomy - it might provide you with some food for thought. Good luck to you  both - PJH

Hello,

I somewhat had a similiar issue, I am 45 and was told by 3 Drs as well as a Board of Dr's that a Mastectomy is the best route. Reason being is... age does have a factor, as women get older their hormones play tricks on the body so the surgeons is looking down the road to protect her system for future problems. Yes,it is hard to decide but as many said to me "Get rid of the Problem"before it comes more of a problem," I am having my reconstruction surgery next week and now that I am done wit the Mastectomy I am actully glad I had it done.

Good Luck... to yoLaughingu and your wife
